The Department processed 1,164 mining-related applications. of these, 185 were granted, 222 rejected, and 75 refused. Prospecting Rights made up the majority of applications, with 597 received, followed by Mining Permits (545) and Mining Rights (22). This reflects ongoing sector application activity and regulatory oversight.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is pleased to announce the publication in the Government Gazette of the promulgation of the Regulated Biofuels Price Regulations, marking a significant milestone in the regulation of the biofuels sector. The Regulated Biofuels Price is in terms of the Petroleum Products Act, 1977. These regulations aim to implement the first phase of the Cabinet-approved Biofuels Regulatory Framework, 2020, which targets a 2% (two percent) biofuels penetration into the total transportation fuels supply to come from first-generation biofuels i.e., agricultural crops. We encourage stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the Regulated Biofuels Price.

The South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC) was officially launched by Minister Gwede Mantashe today [23 May 2025], who hailed it as a "Southern African petroleum champion" committed to supporting the region’s energy needs and strengthening national energy security.
The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr Gwede Mantashe, joined by Ms Venus Blennies-Magage, MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism in the Northern Cape, and the Executive Mayor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, Ms Martha Bartlett, have concluded a follow-up visit to Ekapa Minerals in Kimberley, Northern Cape. The delegation received an updated progress report from the Department’s inspectors, mine management, and rescue teams on developments relating to the ongoing rescue operation.
