FACT SHEET: SMELTERS

Government is working to save and grow South Africa’s Ferrochrome Smelting Industry – A key part of our mining and manufacturing economy.
Smelters use large amounts of electricity to process chrome into ferrochrome, which is exported and used in stainless steel production worldwide.
Due to:
• Rising electricity prices
• Tough global market conditions
Many smelters could no longer afford to operate. Out of 66 smelters, only 11 would remain operational at current electricity prices. This would lead to major job losses and economic decline in affected communities. Glencore and Samancor Chrome had already issued retrenchment notices to workers.
