NATIONAL BIOGAS CONFERENCES

The 3rd National Biogas Conference was hosted by the Department in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), German International Corporation (GIZ) and the Southern African Biogas Industry Association ( SABIA) on 1-3 November 2017 at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) offices in Midrand.

The objectives of the Conference were to:

• Stimulate the market development of biogas as an alternative energy source
• Share feedback on progress made since 2015 by the National Biogas Platform Working Groups with a broader audience
• Provide an opportunity for the project developers, project owners, academia, international experts and other stakeholders to share experience gathered from the implementation of biogas projects.

Programme

  • The 2nd National Biogas Platform was hosted by the Department in partnership with the Southern African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA) on 5-6 March 2015, at Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Auditorium in Sandton. The objectives of the Conference were to:

    • Formulate the position of the Department towards biogas industry development
    • Provide feedback for the working groups of the National Biogas Platform
    • Get an update on the current barriers faced by biogas project developers
    • Develop biogas tangible biogas related outputs on particular sectors such as municipalities; rural areas; agriculture, abattoirs; applied research and development; as well as transport
    • Provide interactive session for industrial sectors that can directly benefit from the implementation of biogas technology.

  • 2015 National Biogas Conference Report
  • The DoE in partnership with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and Southern Africa Biogas Association (SABIA) hosted a National Biogas Conference on 30-31 October 2014 at Midrand. The conference's aims were as follow:

    • To market the multiple social and environmental benefits of biogas as a renewable energy resource options;
    • To bring together all major biogas stakeholders to share views and experience on the benefits of biogas technologies and the challenges facing the industry;
    • To showcase pilot biogas projects undertaken by both the private and public sectors;
    • To act as a platform to foster active discussions between all stakeholders, especially relevant government departments and associated agencies for the removal of barriers to biogas projects and the development of pro-poor and job intensive industry support programs;
    • To identify key research gaps and needs that have to be addressed to mainstream biogas solutions in the private sector, municipalities, rural areas and other low-income human settlement.
