THE ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT PARTNERSHIP (EEP)

The Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) is a Programme which promotes renewable energy (RE), energy efficiency (EE), and clean technology investments. The programme started 2002 in Central America before its implementation in South-East Asia and Africa. The EEP Programme in Southern and East Africa is jointly funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland (lead donor), The Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). EEP implementation in southern and eastern Africa started in March 2010. Total funding for the first phase (2010-2013) was 25 million Euros and second phase (2013-2017) 35 million Euros, please visit the EEP website for Calls for Proposals which are issued regularly: http://eepafrica.org/

The EEP Programme supports projects which aim to provide sustainable energy services to the poor and combat the climate change. To qualify for EEP support, projects must also demonstrate high innovation in delivering energy services, facilitating technology transfer, encouraging cooperation and local stakeholders’ participation in projects. EEP provides seed financing to cover part of the project costs which are necessary to start and develop a business (such as pilot and demonstration activities) or which can create something in value so that it is worthy of investment (such as pre-feasibility and bankable feasibility studies). Funding at this stage helps the businesses to sustain themselves for a period of development until they reach a state when they are able to secure investment to continue funding themselves.

The final beneficiaries of the EEP Progamme include households, communities, health service centers, schools, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and industries that have access to improved energy services from EEP supported projects.
