MEDIA ADVISORY TO ALL MEDIA/NEWS EDITORS DEPUTY MINISTER OF ELECTRICITY AND ENERGY TO HOST SOUTH AFRICA’S ENERGY FUTURE SEMINAR AT THE NORTHERN CAPE RURAL TVET COLLEGE 19 April 2026
The Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, Ms Samantha Graham-Maré and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, will on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, host an Energy Future seminar at the Northern Cape Rural TVET College in Upington. Part of the event is to encourage TVET learners to study courses leveraging opportunities of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM).
The seminar will be held in partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Energy and Water Sector Education Training Authority (EWSETA), the Northern Cape Rural TVET College, and strategic partners such as Eskom, the South Africa National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), and the British Council.
The SAREM was launched last year as an industrial blueprint for the renewable energy manufacturing value chain in South Africa, which will come to fruition as renewable energy technologies are rolled out in the country. The Northern Cape has become the epicentre of South Africa's renewable energy revolution, hosting numerous utility-scale solar photovoltaic and concentrated solar power plants.
The seminar will focus on bridging the gap by fostering a direct dialogue between students, educators, and industry players to ensure young people are not excluded from the implementation of the renewable energy revolution.
The seminar will serve as a precursor to a more formalised partnership between the DEE and the DHET. This will ensure that skills development in the renewable energy sector is streamlined, while giving a practical effect to the human capital development goals of SAREM, which aligns with the objectives of the new Just Energy Transitions Skills Centre in the DHET.
