The goal of the proposed Programme of Activities (PoA) is to utilize the financial mechanism such as carbon finance so that the efficient cook stoves are accessible to the communities. The stated goal of the PoA is to make energy efficient cook stoves available to households that use firewood/charcoal produced from woody biomass for cooking.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 62 623 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CPA, over a crediting period of 10 years.
Tongaat Hulett Sugar Refinery Steam Optimisation Project
The objective of the project is to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions as a result of the combustion of coal on site at the Tongaat Hulett Sugar Refinery (HulRef) by implementing cooling crystallization and multiple effect evaporators, reducing the primary steam demand of the sugar crystallization process and changing the energy source for the evaporation process from primary steam from the boilers to waste heat vapours.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 147 719 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
Biomass Energy Generation through Gasification or Direct Combustion in South Africa
The Programme of Activities will involve renewable energy projects in South Africa, where energy will be derived from renewable biomass through gasification or direct combustion. It will ensure that all potential renewable energy projects from renewable biomass will be able to quality under the CDM process of the Kyoto.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 62 512 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CDM Project Activities, over a crediting period of 21 years.
Grahamstown Invasive Biomass Power Project
The objective of the project activity is to utilize the invasive biomass for the generation of clean electricity. The electricity generated by the project activity will be supplied to the national electricity grid.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 22 562 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
Southern African Fuel Switch PoA-South Africa CPA
The aim of the proposed project activity is to reduce use of fossil fuels in the thermal energy production equipment and thus reduce the GHG emissions associated with the use of thermal energy generation in industries and cogeneration processes.
It is expected that the project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 27 388 tCO2 over the seven-year crediting period (renewable thrice).
Hernic’s Electricity Generation from Waste Gas Project
The objective of the project is to utilize furnace off-gas from the closed ferrochrome furnaces to generate electricity. The electricity will be for captive use by Hernic and will reduce the demand for Eskom generated electricity.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 168 953 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
CDM Africa Small Scale Hydro PoA for Southern Africa
The objective of the CDM Africa Wind and Solar Programme of Activities for South Africa is to The objective of the Hydro Programme of Activities for Southern Africa is to develop a multi-track platform for overcoming regulatory, institutional, financial and structural hurdles for the roll-out of hydro power by providing access to carbon finance.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 000 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CDM Project Activities.
Biomass residues power generation Programme
The Biomass residues power generation Programme aims to promote and support the implementation, replacement or retrofit of power-and-heat plants, utilizing biomass residues as primary fuel. Extra electricity is likely to be exported into the electrical distribution grid, displacing the equivalent power generated from a fossil-fuel intensive baseline energy mix
The proposed Programme of Activities will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 267 255 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CDM Project Activities.
Improved Cook Stoves for East Africa (ICSEA)
The objective is to disseminate fuel-efficient stoves throughout East and Southern Africa (Uganda, Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Kingdom of Lesotho and South Africa). By reducing the fuel consumption in comparison to traditional cooking technologies, the project reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the use of non-renewable biomass like wood and charcoal.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 48 647 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 7 years (renewable twice).
Manufacture and Utilisation of Bio-Coal Briquettes in Stutterheim,South Africa
The aim of the proposed project activity is to support socio-economic and technical development in the energy sector that will contribute to sustainable and affordable use of energy sources. The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by combustion of bio-coal briquettes instead of coal for thermal energy generation.
It is expected that the project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 133599 tCO2 over the 10-year crediting period. .
Small Scale Renewable Energy Carbon Programme (SRECP)
The purpose of the Small Scale Renewable Energy Carbon Programme – SRECP (hereafter referred as the PoA) is to support the development and implementation of small-scale renewable energy projects in South Africa in order to displace grid-connected, fossil fuel based electricity generation, thereby reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 24 228 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 7 (renewable) years.
Distributed Energy Generation’s Waste Heat to Power Project at Xawo
The proposed project activity is an initiative to recover waste heat from waste gas from six existing semi-closed type ferrochrome furnaces at Xawo and will reduce demand for electricity.
It is expected that the project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 247 064 tCO2 over the 10-year crediting period.
South African Large Scale Grid Connected Solar Park Programme
The main objective of the South African Large Scale Grid Connected Solar Park Programme is to contribute to the development and promotion of RE in the RSA by building a framework to secure carbon revenue for solar park developers. The programme seeks to develop a series of grid connected solar power projects that supply clean electricity to either the national grid of the RSA or an identified consumer via RSA’s grid.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 67 941 (tCO2e) per annum over a crediting period of 7 years.
TWE Golden Valley Wind Power Project
The purpose of the TWE Golden Valley Wind Power Project is the construction of a 147.6 MW wind power plant in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The wind park will consist of 82 Vestas V100-1.8 MW turbines. It is estimated that the project activity will supply 509,303 MWh of clean electricity to the South African national electricity grid per year resulting in a net load factor of 39.39%.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 481,997 (tCO2e) per annum over a crediting period of 7 years.
The purpose of the Programme of Activities (hereafter referred as the PoA) is to reduce the use of fossil fuel in the thermal energy production equipment and thus to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with the use of the thermal energy generation equipment in industrial and cogeneration processes. .

City of Cape Town Landfill Gas Extraction and Utilization Programme
The project objective is to capture and combust landfill gas (LFG) to generate “green energy” (electricity and heat) at solid waste disposal sites (landfills) in the municipality of Cape Town, South Africa.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 124 604 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 7 years.
Installation of energy efficient ventilation fans at the KDC East Gold Mine in South Africa
The project will reduce underground electricity consumption through the replacement of energy inefficient auxiliary ventilation fans with more efficient auxiliary ventilation fans. Up to 240 fans will be replaced in this project activity.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 48,117 (tCO2e) per annum over a crediting period of 10 years.

The electricity will be supplied into the South African national electricity grid. It will contribute to the development and promotion of renewable energy in the South Africa.

Compressed Air Energy Efficient at Harmony Gold Mining Company
The Programme of Activities (PoA) involves the installation of surface and underground compressed air control valve units and hydraulic equipment together with REMS3-OAN control system. The project activity involves a set of measures to improve energy efficiency in air demand at Harmony Gold Mining Company.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49 974 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
CarbonSoft Open Source PoA, LED lighting distribution: Pan Africa
The objective of the project is to eliminate the greenhouse emissions from burning kerosene for light. It will reduce the weekly fuel cost burden for lower income South African families and provide a more environmentally benign, brighter and healthier form of light to South African families.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 079 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 7 years.
The Capture, Destruction and Utilisation of Mine Methane at the Beatrix West Shaft in South Africa
The objective of the proposed project activity is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the capture, destruction and utilization of mine methane from the West shaft of the Beatrix Gold Mine. The proposed project will install structures underground to capture the methane and pipe it to the Beatrix West ventilation shaft where it will be piped to surface. Once at surface, the methane will be flared and used to generate electricity. .
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 161 642 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
Bokpoort CSP (Concentrating Solar Power) Project, South Africa
The purpose of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by installing a greenfield grid connected parabolic through concentrated solar thermal power plant. This project activity will employ parabolic trough concentrated solar thermal technology to be constructed on a portion of the farm Bokpoort 390 in Groblershoop in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. The installed technology uses very precise parabolic shaped, sun tracking mirrors to concentrate and collect sunlight on thermally efficient receiver tubes running through the optical focal line of the parabolic mirror troughs.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 211,533 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
NuPlanet Small Scale Hydropower PoA
The purpose of the Programme of Activities (PoA) is to support the development of hydropower projects that will supply renewable electricity into the grid. CDM Project Activities (CPA) 1 is a hydropower project in South Africa – Stortemelk Hydro (Pty) Ltd
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 266 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CDM Project Activities (CPA), over a crediting period of 10 years.
Energy Efficient Cook stoves in South Africa
The objective of the PoA is to replace the current usage of conventional cook stoves in the households of ECP. This will improve the indoor air pollution and reduce harmful GHG emission evolved into the atmosphere. The installed bio mass cooker posses the advantage efficiently transferring the heat to the cooking medium ensuring the reduced usage of cooking fuel and GHG emission reductions. The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34 381(tCO2e) per annum.
Residential Hot Water Efficiency Programme in South Africa
The objective of the Programme of Activities (PoA) is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the roll out of energy efficient water heating technologies in South Africa which will displace the consumption of fossil fuel based electricity. The technologies included in this PoA are solar water heating systems and heat pumps. The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60 226 (tCO2e) per annum.
Installation Of Energy Efficient Ventilation Fans
The purpose of the Programme of Activities is to support the development of Solar PV (Photovoltaic) facilities that will supply renewable electricity into the grid.
CDM Project Activities 1 (CPA) is a 10MW Solar PV project in South Africa that will be supplying renewable electricity into the grid. It is located on portion 6 of the Farm Broederspruit 213, north east of Vryburg; North West Province, South Africa. The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 365 (tCO2e) per annum.
Grid Connected Photovoltaic (PV) Renewable Electricity Generating Facilities PoA
Makhado Coal Mine Methane Gas Flaring Project
The objective of the project is to capture and flare methane from mining activities. Once the methane volume and flows prove sufficient, the methane will be used to generate electricity for internal use. Once the capacity exceeds 15 MW electricity will be supplied to the national grid.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 180 000 (tCO2e) per annum.
South African Wind Power Projects
The goal of the Programme of Activities is to promote the installation of grid connected wind energy generation facilities across South Africa. This programme will decrease power shortage, diversify the grid and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The electricity will be sold to Eskom, the national electricity utility.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 104 321 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CDM Project Activities.
Samancor Chrome Witbank Electricity from Waste Gas.
The objective of the project is to utilize furnace off-gas from the closed ferrochrome furnaces to generate electricity. The electricity will be for captive use by Samancor Chrome and will reduce the demand for Eskom generated electricity.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 157 166 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
South Africa Renewable Energy Programme (SA-REP)
The South Africa Renewable Energy Programme (SA-REP) will support the development and implementation of small-scale grid-connected renewable energy projects in South Africa and therefore reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Renewable energy technologies implemented under the programme will include small hydro, wind, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and geothermal.
It is expected that the project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 25,521 tCO2 over the 7-year crediting period (renewable thrice).
Rheboksfontein Wind Energy Facility
The proposed project activity is an initiative to export renewable electricity produced by the Rheboksfontein Wind Energy Facility to the national grid, which is currently mostly derived from coal. The wind power generated from the project site will be replacing electricity from the national grid.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 327 982 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
Karoo Renewable Energy Facility (Noblesfontein Wind Project)
The objective of the proposed project activity is to supply renewable energy ,generated from solar resources to the South African national grid, thereby displacing the greenhouse gas intensive electricity of the grid.
It is expected that the project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 846 960 tCO2 over the 10-year crediting period.
SA Calcium Carbide Furnace Waste Gas to Electricity CDM Project
The objective of the project is to generate electricity using furnace waste gas. The electricity generated on site will displace a net of 2,191MWh per year of the electricity imported from the South African national grid.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 686 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
Vertical shaft brick kiln (VSBK) Programme of Activities for South Africa
The goal of the Programme of Activities (PoA) is to promote and support the uptake of VSBK technology in the brick manufacturing industry in South Africa. By supporting and promoting the implementation of the more energy efficient VSBK technology, compared to the alternative less energy efficient clamp technology used most commonly in South Africa.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5000 (tCO2e) per annum for the first CDM Project Activity (CPA), over a crediting period of 10 years.
Grid Connected Wind Power Plant in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa
The objective of the proposed project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through producing electricity from wind. The electricity will be supplied into the South African national grid and displace the generation of traditional coal-based electricity.

The objective of the project is to export renewable energy electricity produced to the national grid as the current electricity is mostly generated from coal.
It is expected that the project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 70 925 tCO2 over the 10-year crediting period.
Neusberg Grid Connected Hydroelectric Power Plant, South Africa
The objective of the project is to supply clean electricity to the grid of the Republic of South Africa. It envisages the construction and operation of a run-off-river hydroelectricity power plant with installed capacity of 12.57 MW near the town of Kakamas in the Northern Cape Province..
The power plant will comprise of three hydro turbines and associated infrastructure. The produce electricity will be supplied to Eskom power grid.
It is forecast that project will achieve an average annual emission reduction of 66 826 tCO2 over the 7-year crediting period.
The objective of the proposed project is to generate electricity using wind. The generated electricity will be exported to the South African national grid and will be displacing the electricity generated from the fossil based sources.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1 010 419 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
The objective of the proposed project is to generate electricity using animal manure as a feed stock. The proposed biogas digester system will consist of, amongst others, up to six digesters and six gas generator units and will generate approximately 2.22 MW of electricity upon completion.

The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 71 520 (tCO2e) per annum (for the first CDM Project Activity), over a crediting period of 7 years.
Exxaro Resources Limited (Exxaro) plans to construct the Market Coke Plant (the project facility) at their Grootegeluk Coal Mine in Limpopo Province of South Africa. The Market Coke Waste Heat Recovery Plant (the project activity) will utilise waste heat recovered from the coking pyrolysis process in the project facility to produce electricity.
The project activity is expected to have a gross installed capacity of 60MW and the objective of the project activity is to supply the electricity produced, 462 000 MWh/yr, to the internal grid of the Grootegeluk Coal Mine thereby displacing more carbon intensive electricity from the South African national grid operated by Eskom (the baseline) and therefore also lessening the burden on the national grid.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 450 912 (tCO2e) per annum, over a crediting period of 10 years.
The objective of the project is to use wind power generate electricity ,which will be delivered to the national grid of South Africa. It will comprise the installation of 2.5 MW wind turbines (per turbine) with a total installed capacity of 80 MW.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 305 220 (tCO2e) per annum (for the first CDM programme activity), over a crediting period of 10 years.
The objective of this small scale programme of activities is to install heat pumps and solar water heaters throughout South Africa. The solutions can be installed individually or as a combination of a heat pump and solar geyser. The installations will take place in domestic or commercial buildings and will replace exiting electric geysers and hence reduce CO2 emissions.
The proposed project activity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 11 959 (tCO2e) per annum (for the first CDM programme activity), over a crediting period of 10 years.
The objective of the PoA is to install technologies that improve the energy efficiency of refrigeration in commercial buildings in a manner compliant with CDM requirements.
The PoA is intended to include multiple countries, with the foundation country being South Africa. The first CDM Project Activity (CPA) will be the Energy Partners refrigeration plant efficiency improvements in Pick n Pay stores (South Africa’s second largest food retailer) across South Africa.

The objective of the proposed project is to reduce N2O emissions in the tail gas by installing a tertiary N2O abatement technology and specialised monitoring equipment that is installed at the tail gas stream after the abatement of N2O emissions.
The objective of the proposed Programme of Activities (PoA) is to use carbon finance for the introduction of low greenhouse gas emitting water purification systems to provide clean drinking water to low income households. It seeks to further the access of households and communities to clean and safe drinking water, by promoting low greenhouse gas emitting water purification technologies. This PoA is thus primarily designed for the long-term improvement of the living conditions of local people.
