MINISTER ZWANE CONGRATULATES SOUTH AFRICAN SCIENTIST ON WINNING INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has congratulated Ms Tshiamo Legoale for bringing home gold from the FameLab international Science Festival held in the UK. Ms Legoale, the first South African to win this award, landed back in the country this morning, after her project “harvesting gold from wheat crops on dump mine”, won over judges and audiences alike. Ms Legoale, a beneficiary of one of government’s bursary programmes, is a geologist and researcher at Mintek’s small scale mining and beneficiation unit and was one of the Minister’s special guests at the recent Budget Vote Speech in Parliament. “We are very proud that during this youth month, young people like Ms Legoale are demonstrating that South Africa is capable of producing scientist of international caliber. As we continue to move forward with government’s plans on beneficiation and adding value to our mineral resources, in line with Government’s nine-point plan to grow the economy, skilled scientist like Ms Legoale and many others will be an asset to our country our R&D initiatives”. Minister Zwane said Mintek is a science council reporting to Department of Mineral Resources, responsible for, inter alia research and development in mining skills development.
