The Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources Dr Nobuhle Nkabane is leading the South African delegation to the 25th African Energy Forum (AEF) currently underway in Nairobi, Kenya.
Deputy Minister Nkabane addressed the Ministerial Roundtable that will deliberated on the topic: “Africa for Africa Building Energy for the Just Transition - What does Africa Want?” The roundtable provided a platform for African leaders in the energy fraternity to deliberate on ways to craft the path for secure and sustainable energy supply on the continent. Deliberations centered around the importance of what Africa really needs and wants, and how the international community can partner with Africa to achieve a just transition.
South Africa’s contribution to the deliberations at the 25th AEF is rooted in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which calls on Africans to aspire for a continent whose development is people driven. Therefore, South Africa reiterates the call that energy production in Africa must be aligned to Africa’s socio-economic development, balancing the need to eliminate energy poverty whilst ensuring the transition from high to low carbon emissions.
As part of South Africa’s programme at the 25th AEF, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMRE) will, on Wednesday 21 June 2023, host a Country Spotlight session that will a focus on “Investment Opportunities within South Africa’s Changing Energy Landscape”. Deputy Minister Nkabane and senior government officials will showcase investment opportunities that exist in the country’s energy sector.
The AEF unites governments, utilities, and regulators with development finance institutions, commercial banks, power developers, technology providers, and
professional services. It is a platform that allows South Africa to not only interact with relevant stakeholders but also lure potential investors for the advancement of our economy.
