The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr. Gwede Mantashe (MP) will on 27 September 2024 handover the fencing project of Mcambalala Agricultural Fields in the Intsika Yethu Local Municipality, Eastern Cape. The fencing project, which forms part of Impala Platinum Mine Social and Labour Plan (SLP), will enable the Mcambalala maize farmers and the community to revitalise crop production in the area. The Social and Labour Plans (SLPs) are provided for in the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) as a social license for mining companies to coexist with communities and promote the social and economic welfare of all South Africans, including those in labour sending areas. Mining companies are therefore required to develop and implement SLPs to enhance the quality of life in communities. The fencing project will further enable the farmers to contribute to food production and ultimately drive inclusive economic growth, job creation, and eradicate poverty.
