By Thabisho Kgaditsi on 1/27/2025

The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will attend the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit, taking place from 27-28 January 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on behalf of His Excellency Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa.

The Summit will convene leaders from across the continent with a unified goal: to accelerate energy access and provide electricity to 300 million people by 2030. This ambitious initiative, known as Mission 300, is championed by the African Union, working with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and African country governments.

It aims to address the alarming statistic that nearly 600 million people in Africa currently lack access to electricity, which constitutes approximately 83% of the global population without energy access through continental initiatives including the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM), the Continental Power System Master Plan (CMP) and the Programme of Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA).

The summit will focus on critical discussions surrounding energy policies, reforms, and investments necessary for driving sustainable energy access across Africa.

Key areas of discussion will include:
1. Transforming African Energy through effective policies and reforms.
2. The role of international partners in accelerating energy transformation.
3. Concrete actions on utility reforms, renewable energy integration, and energy access goals.
4. The importance of private investment in strengthening Africa’s energy sector.

The summit aims to align African countries toward achieving “universal access to energy by 2030,” in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Minister Ramokgopa's attendance underscores South Africa’s national commitment and priority to deliver affordable, reliable, sustainable, quality electricity for all. In addition, South Africa is hosting the G20 and G20 Energy Ministers. The Summit provides an opportunity for the Minister to further communicate on the G20 Energy Programme and ensure alignment with the continent’s energy aspirations.

The Minister eagerly anticipates the outcomes of the summit and remains committed to supporting the objectives of Mission 300, ensuring that the benefits of energy access reach every corner of our nation and the continent at large.
