The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will convene the 4 th Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) and Ministerial meetings at The Capital Zimbali, Ballito, KwaZulu Natal from 7 – 10 October 2025.

The G20 ETWG is an essential forum that brings together the world's largest economies to discuss, collaborate, and develop strategies for effective energy transitions. Under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, the country is prioritizing an inclusive energy agenda that emphasizes energy access, efficiency, equitable financing, and regional interconnectivity.

Members of the media are invited to cover Dr Ramokgopa’s opening address, which will be followed by a Media Briefing as follows:

4. The G20 Ministerial Nuclear Energy conference and Media Briefing

The Department in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will convene a G20 Nuclear Energy Ministerial conference on the 09th of October at the Coastland Hotel in Umhlanga, thereafter Dr Ramokgopa together with the IAEA Director General, Mr Rafael Mariano Grossi will host a media briefing to articulate the importance of nuclear energy in the global energy transitions.

5. Visit of to visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

The purpose of Mr Grossi’s visit to South Africa is to strengthen co-operation between South Africa and the IAEA in support of the country’s Nuclear Energy Programme, Research Reactor Development, Human Resource Development, and Peaceful Applications of Nuclear Technology. This is Mr Grossi’s first visit to South Africa since assuming his role as IAEA Director General in 2019.

The Director General will visit the South African National Nuclear Energy Corporation’s SAFARI-1 which celebrated 60 years on 18 March 2025, and the NTP Radioisotopes which is amongst the four global producers of isotopes, nuclear medicine used for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

He will also visit the Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure ( NuMeRi), which is a hub for nuclear technology expertise in medicine and bioscience.

South Africa is one of the IAEA founding states in 1957. It is globally renowned for its nuclear technology, research and development and innovation expertise.
